Beautiful architecture and a living memory of the Norman occupancy of Sicily in the 12th century

it’s estimated that the walls of this cathedral hold about two tons of gold.

Between the towers, a Neoclassical portico was added in 1770 to protect the main bronze doors. The doors, completed in 1186, were made by Bonanno Pisano, architect of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Built between 1174 and 1189, it’s an amalgamation of Byzantine, Norman, and Arab elements in a Romanesque building.

The cathedral in Monreale is actually pretty cool. The mosaic on the walls and ceiling is especially impressive. If you climb to the top you also get a great view.
