불국사(佛國寺)의 말사로 선덕여왕 3년인 634년에 창건되었다. 국보 제30호로 지정된 모전석탑(模磚石塔)을 비롯하여, 화쟁국사비 비석대(和諍國師碑 碑石臺), 석정(石井), 석조(石槽), 초석(礎石), 석등 대석(臺石)과 사경(寺境) 이외에 당간지주(幢竿支柱)가 남아 있어 보존되고 있다. 원효(元曉)가 이곳에서 화엄경소(華嚴經疏)를 썼고, 솔거가 그린 관음보살상은 신화(神畵)로 일컬어졌다고 한다.
