Beijing is the northern capital of China
Beijing is the capital of the PRC and one of the largest megacities on the world map.
The name «Beijing» translates as «the Northern Capital». The first settlements on the site where the modern city is now located, existed in the 11th century BC. The history of China has left many places of interest here, which attract thousands of tourists every year. The most outstanding ancient buildings of Beijing are the buildings of the Forbidden City, the largest palace complex in the world, which served as the residence of Chinese emperors until 1912. Today, the Forbidden City is a museum of works of art and traditional Chinese architecture. Among the ancient monuments, it is also worth noting the Summer Palace, the Wanping Fortress, and the Bell and Drum Towers. All of them are noted in the city guide.Other popular places in the city are Tiananmen Square, the largest in the world with a gate of the same name, the National Museum of China and the mausoleum of the ruler Mao Zedong. The metropolitan area is tangled by a web of roads and railways. Transportation in Beijing includes metro lines and nearly 600 bus and trolleybus routes.
