Hanoi – a millennium of history
The capital of Vietnam, the city of Hanoi, is located on the banks of the Red River, also known as the Hồng Hà.
This huge metropolis with a population of more than 6 million people is the main political, cultural and educational centre of the country.Hanoi is an ancient city, the history of its development dates back more than a thousand years. Between the ancient fortress and the river there is an old city, in which local artisans and merchants have long been engaged in business. As you'll see from the city guide, the street names here directly indicate the occupations of their residents: Hang Be Street (sails), Hang Quat Street (fans), Hang Bac Street (jewellers) and Hang Thung Street (barrels), among others. The city's places of interest are architectural monuments of ancient and modern history. The Hanoi Citadel, which is listed as a UNESCO heritage site, the thousand-year-old Mot Kot Pagoda, the architectural ensemble of President Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, and the Temple of Literature are a partial list of architectural attractions in Hanoi. West Lake and Lake of the Restored Sword, surrounded by temple and palace buildings, are considered the most beautiful natural attractions and popular places in the vicinity of the city.Transport in Hanoi is well developed and financially very accessible, based upon numerous bus routes. You can call a taxi, use the mototaxi services, and for short distance trips – cycle. For travelling around the city you can cheaply rent a car or scooter.
