1908年西門紅樓興築完成迄今已屆百週年，是台灣第一座官方興建的公營市場，亦是今天全島所保存最古老完整的三級古蹟市場建築物。由當時任職台灣總督府營繕課、擅長西洋建築風格的日籍建築師近藤十郎設計。年輕大膽的創意以「八卦造型」取其八方雲集之意作為市場入口、「十字架造型」作為市場主體的特色，不僅空前絕後，更是東、西建築史上的首例。目前眾人所稱的八角樓和十字樓，另加上緊鄰兩旁的南北廣場統稱為「西門紅樓」。
