Colombo is an exotic harbour

Colombo is the largest settlement and port of Sri Lanka, at one time it was marked on the map of the island as the capital.

According to various sources, the city's name translates as «harbour with mango trees» or «the harbour on the river». For more than 2,000 years, this deep-sea harbour has been known and used by sailors and merchants from China and Asia.Colombo is an important religious and cultural centre of the country. Here you'll find places of interest such as the Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque and the Buddhist temple of Gangaramaya and many Hindu temples. The city has a university, a large public library, the National Museum and the Astronomical Observatory. A popular place is the Viharamahadevi park, where you can walk along shady alleys or along water reservoirs. Your city guide will help you to find the park.To travel around the areas of Colombo you can take bus routes, take the train, get a taxi or catch a ride on the street motor-taxis "tuk-tuk". Tourists should take great care when using public transport. As in many Asian countries, bus drivers don't really care about the rules of the road. They go way over the speed limit and don't even close the doors!
