Large plates of sauced fish, chicken, shrimp or pork served with squash chutney, dill-egg-potato salad, baked cheesy macaroni, rice and beans. Open for lunch until late afternoon. The beer is cold.

The best, inexpensive lunch stop in Soufrière is Martha’s Tables (001 758 459 7270; marthastables.com), serving big portions of Martha’s home-cooked Creole dishes (around £8 for main courses).

Martha and her daughter Lisa are cooking up the best food and mixing up the best rum punch on the island. If there's no one there, they aren't open - just yell "hello" and Martha might come outside.
