Joseph Sturge Monument

Joseph Sturge was born in 1793 and moved to Birmingham in 1822. Sturge worked for slavery to be abolished, and an Act of Parliament was passed in 1833. Sturge died in 1859. The statue was carved by John Thomas, and was unveiled in 1862 in front of 12,000 people. In 2006 the statue was restored.
